Match vs Lincolnshire Vets held at Sheringham Golf Club on 15th August 2016
NVLGS • August 21, 2016
What a difference in the weather from our last match! The sun shone and temperatures rose to the mid-twenties. A light breeze – unusually calm for Sheringham – helped to stop us all from overheating but was enough to make club selection still a challenge. The recent dry weather had given the course a true links look with firm running fairways and quick greens – staying out of the long rough brought us rewards.
Many of the ladies from Lincolnshire had had long journeys, Jackie their Captain travelling from Grimsby and several of the ladies staying overnight in Norwich. This match sees a bigger team with six pairs a side. The games were all hard fought with five having to be settled on the last green – clearly two well-matched sides. For Norfolk, it was good to see Iet Cuppens and Alex Cowie returning from recent injuries and to see our Match Captain Pat Bland there to encourage us on at halfway – we hope to see her playing again in the not too distant future.
The lovely weather encouraged one or two to sample a post-match glass of Pimms and the meal of local crab salad or chicken followed by cheesecake or strawberries was enjoyed by all. It set the Lincolnshire ladies up well for their long journey home but the consensus was that the journey had been well worth it.

Competitions Secretary Jill Bullimore reported that Friday May 16th saw the first competition for High Handicap Ladies from the Society. It was great to see 9 teams from ten clubs taking part in a team of four Waltz. This format was really liked by the ladies that took part as there was less pressure on having to score. Dereham was a great venue and were good hosts. Although the weather had turned colder, the teams took on the challenge. The winners were Christine Joy, Irene Lindsay, Gerry Shaw and Gail Drage from Wensum Valley with 83 points. In second place, on count back, were Kari Joyce, Sue Ryan, Kerry Williams and Lynne Jellicoe from Eaton with 81 points, just nudging out the team of Ros Foster, Gerri Williams, Val Miller and Stephanie Fisher from Bawburgh. Feedback from the ladies was that they would like to take part in this type of competition again next year.

Proceeds of the raffles held at the competitions in 2024 totalled £1,407.70. A cheque for this amount has been sent to the Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals Charity for the Jenny Lind Appeal. Our thanks go to Jill Bullimore, Angie Allsopp and Sue for running the raffles and to all those who bought tickets.

The Spring Four Ball Betterball Stableford was held at Gorleston Golf Club on 14th April 2025. Competitions Secretary Jill Bullimore reported that 92 members from 14 clubs took part. The weather was fine and dry. However, the wind did get stronger as the day progressed making this a factor to wrestle with. Gorleston Golf Club were superb hosts; everyone made every effort to make our day enjoyable. There were particularly satisfied faces after a lovely fish and chip meal. Congratulations to the winners, Sue Olds and Sue Fage from Wensum Valley, with a creditable 46 points.

Angie Allsopp reported that 88 ladies from 14 clubs played in this event. It was a very good day, the weather was extremely kind and we were looked after very well by all the staff at Bawburgh. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day and quite a few stayed for the presentation. Unfortunately, we did not have a starter so everyone saw themselves off, which was not a problem.
