A larger field entered the Championships this year, a factor for this was moving the competition to the end of the season from mid-summer, this meant we had a lot more entries particularly in Division 1. Last year there were only seven entries in this category but this year twenty-two entered, so this made for a much better competition. A slightly lower entry from Division 2 of fourteen from nineteen still made for a solid competition.

The weather was good and the Dunston members were very welcoming and supported us by providing a starter, thank you Club Captain and Hilary who ran the raffle for me.

Congratulations to the winners who were as follows, in Division 1 Scratch and defending her title, winning the Championship Cup with a fine score of 81 was Sue Clarke from Kings Lynn, runner up winning the Joy Boult Salver, was Anne Sibley from Wensum Valley with 87. Best Nett, winning the Pallister Cup for Division 1 was also Sue Clarke from Kings Lynn with a score of 73, so a double winner. The Over 65 Gwen Watts Salver was won by Anne Sibley with a score of 76ocb.

In Division 2 winning the stableford competition and the Curtis Cup, was Pip Martin from Dunston Hall with a score of 35, runner up, winning the Committee Salver, was Avril Carey from Eaton with 33 points and third was Julie Procter from Kings Lynn. The Over 65 Bessie Turnbull Salver was won by Pip Martin making her a double winner also. Well done everyone who took part and enjoyed the day.

Match Captain Sue Saunders reported that the second match of the season was played at home against Lincolnshire at Thetford in extremely wet conditions.

The fairways were in a very poor condition after the recent prolonged hot spell, and it was agreed that players could prefer lies. Both teams struggled with the rain and the fairways but there were some excellent performances and some very close matches.

This match always has a larger squad of 12 players which gives more people a chance of being selected and a warm welcome was given to two new team players – Phon Green from Bawburgh and Anne Ellis from Hunstanton.

Big thanks to Thetford Golf Club who provided excellent hospitality and a very tasty evening meal. More importantly huge thanks go from the Captain to the team members who are always such good sports and great fun.

          Fantastic result

Norfolk won 4 matches to 2

Our first match of the season was played against Cambs & Hunts at the Cambridge Country Club, Bourn. This was a new venue for all of us, with the clubhouse having top of the range facilities in health and wellness and marbled corridors and an outdoor cinema. I was told that the golf course itself is in the process of an upgrade which will take a few years and, with the dry conditions and some blind tee shots, it was a really good test of our ability.

Competitions Secretary Jill Bullimore reported that Friday May 16th saw the first competition for High Handicap Ladies from the Society. It was great to see 9 teams from ten clubs taking part in a team of four Waltz. This format was really liked by the ladies that took part as there was less pressure on having to score. Dereham was a great venue and were good hosts. Although the weather had turned colder, the teams took on the challenge.

Match Captain Sue Saunders reported that this was our third game of the season and, when completing the match sheet, Suffolk Seniors asked if we wanted to play off handicap or scratch as they had brought some new players into this friendly fixture to gain experience. I, possibly foolishly, said scratch.

Unusually for a Tuesday this year we had pleasant weather conditions for the four fourballs even though the forecast was predicting rain. These games are always played in a fun and friendly manner, and this was no exception. The course was in good condition with fast greens and it made for some really competitive matches.

Hospitality provided by Thetford Golf Club was first-class and an extremely tasty two course meal was enjoyed by all. We had a super day and my thanks go to the team.

Once again this event was oversubscribed and apologies to those who did not get in as sadly we could only accommodate 26 teams with a two tee start. Everyone seemed to have a good day out and there was a very pleasant atmosphere in the clubhouse.

Match Captain Sue Saunders reported that it was her first scratch match of the season and it had been a struggle to get the 12 players required for the away match in Lincolnshire.

Six games of four ball better ball were played in good spirits in fine golfing weather on a pleasant golf course that wasn't too long. The scoring in general was very good and every match was toughly fought. It was the first outing for the Vets for Bev Fowler of Mundesley, Jane Herrington of Thetford and Kay Bailey from Eaton and they all proved to be a valuable asset to the team.

A big thank you to the Sleaford Club for their hospitality and well done to the Norfolk team. As so many competitions are now for the handicap golfer, it was lovely to play without shots and the result was a friendly 3-3 draw.

This was a brand-new fixture played off handicap with the thought that it would be great to allow more members to play in our matches against other counties.

Match Captain Sue Saunders reported that it was her first in charge, and she had selected from a number of clubs. It was agreed that it would be played as a 4 ball better ball with 12 players in each team. The teams met in bright sunshine and the match was played in dry conditions although it did end up being extremely chilly at the end of the day.

Obviously, most players were new to the team and several members were unsure of what to wear with much hilarity regarding team colours and several different shades of cerise/pink were on show.

Lincolnshire sent their team selection ahead of time so that partnerships could be chosen with similar handicaps and the match was played in good spirits. The teams enjoyed a two-course meal of oven-roasted chicken breast, dauphinoise potato, broccoli with a mushroom cream sauce followed by lemon meringue pie.

A big thanks to Heacham Manor and their Secretary Karen for her help in organising the event. The course was in excellent condition and the meal was extremely tasty.

The Spring Four Ball Betterball Stableford was held at Sprowston Manor Golf Club on 24th April 2024.

Competitions Secretary Jill reported that 108 ladies from 19 clubs took part. We were only allocated one tee and so there were around three and a half hours from the first to the last teeing off. Unfortunately, the weather was very variable with some ladies experiencing everything from hail to rain showers to a little sunshine. Obviously with this large field, play did slow at times, the weather being the biggest factor with ladies having to put on and take off rain gear. A few comments were made about this but had it been a little warmer and drier this would not have been a factor. The winners were in the first group out and to give them their due they stayed to the end to be presented with their trophies. Due to the length of time from first to last, a lot of ladies left and so there were few at the presentation at the end. Maybe if this scenario is repeated we forgo the presentation and make other arrangements. Clubs will and do prefer a one tee start.

Sprowston Manor's hospitality could not have been better. They really went above and beyond and nothing was too much trouble. In particular, the Sprowston member who acted as starter was willing to check on nearest the pins and confirm with all the players the change we had to make. The nearest the pin on the 6th was late getting in position and this was not noticed until several groups had gone past so another hole was chosen so that all could attempt it. Sprowston Manor gave a Four Ball for the raffle as well as leisure day passes and cuddly toys to augment our raffle which was appreciated and a lot of raffle tickets were sold. The Ladies' Captain, Hazel, gave her time to sell raffle tickets and that was so helpful. It had been arranged that baked potatoes with various fillings would be the meal afterwards

. This perhaps could have had a salad to go with it. We did also have coffee or tea on arrival.

All in all this was a very successful event and I am told was the biggest field we have had, may be because it was central and was a reasonable cost.

Match Captain Chrissie Owens reported that the final match of the season was played at Ely Golf Club later than planned, having been postponed earlier in the year due to bad weather.

With the match taking place in September, it was difficult to field a team due to holidays and other golfing so only six players (3 pairs) made the trip to Ely. Anne Ellis from Sheringham kindly stepped in at the last minute for the team and to play her first Vets match.

Undoubtedly Ely City's mature parkland course was a real pleasure to play but both accuracy and solid ball striking were the key to scoring well!

This was always going to be a tough match against Cambs & Hunts as some of their players are also county senior players. However, all games were played in good spirit and the ladies very hospitable offering a delicious meal of pan-fried chicken with dauphinoise potatoes, carrot puree and crispy stuffing.

As this was the last match, Chrissie would like to thank everyone who has played over the past couple of years and hands over the role to Sue Saunders of Thetford Golf Club.

Match Captain Chrissie Owens reported that the second match of the season was played at home against Lincolnshire at King's Lynn. After a wet start to the day, the match was played in dry conditions ending in a glorious afternoon.

A warm welcome was given to two new team players - Kath Malvern from Thetford and Sally Bettinson from King's Lynn. With three home players the team was in a good position. The traditionally larger squad of 10 was played for this Lincolnshire match.

Match Captain Chrissie Owens reported that this was the first match of the season, the match against Bedfordshire having been cancelled by Bedfordshire and the match v Cambs & Hunts rearranged due to the weather.

This was always going to be a tough match as we were playing against Suffolk's seniors team. Rookery Park was in fantastic condition; a long course which played to its full yardage. Sadly the result did not reflect the quality of the golf played by Norfolk.
